I am so sad to read of the death of Jon Hiseman, one of THE great drummers and who I was fortunate enough to see twice with Colosseum II. I have followed his career since buying Daughter of Time from a friend back in the 70s - watching the 1994 Reunion Concert dvd next time will be extremely poignant.... Collapse

Since 1969 I’ve been a fan of Colosseum and Jon and Barbara. The music has meant so much to me and is constantly played by me on one device or another. I was so pleased to be able to make 2 JCM gigs in the UK and able to speak with Jon on both occasions so what a shock when he left us! He will be missed by so many people and I’ve had numerous friends enquire about his passing. My love to all the Hiseman family and the Colosseum family, because that’s what we are!!... Collapse

I first became aware of Jon Hiseman in 1972, when I heard his dynamic drumming and musicianship on the doubledecker "Colosseum Live", an almost physical tour de force (if this makes any sense). Now he is gone - - and yet he is still here with us. I listen to Rope Ladder and am comforted. Peace, peace.... Collapse

I was so saddened to hear of Jon's death. Although I was aware of him as a member of John Mayall's band, he first came to the forefront of my attention with Colosseum, but the greatest joy he gave me was with UJRE, a collaboration of musicians that in my view has never in this country received the praise and recognition it deserved. And thanks to modern technology I have also been able to admire his work before Colosseum with the New Jazz Orchestra and Graham Bond.
Life can be unfair at times, as he plainly left with so much still to do, but we, as mere listeners, will still be able to remember him every time we play a track on which he plays. Life passes but the music lives on.
To Barbara, Marcus and Anna, and his extended family, my sincere condolences. Jon was greatly loved and respected for his contribution to music in his various capacities.
If there is any sort of afterlife there is one hell of a band there now.... Collapse

I have written a tribute to Jon that can be found at drew5571.wordpress.com that tells of my introduction to his music. Upon reading about Jon”s illness, I was introduced and reintroduced to the music he played. The album he did with Clem Clempson and Mark Clarke is a great introduction to his work. My favorite songs are “ The Kettle”, “ Foyers Of Fun”, “ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” and “ Rivers”. I bought “ Colosseum Live” and was reintroduced to “ Lost Angeles”. I bought the biography of Jon Hiseman” called “ Playing The Band”. I liked his attitude about music and advice about drumming. He was a man humble about his achievements but proud of his family. May God give you comfort, healing, hope and strength. His playing with Colosseum and other bands have given me so much enjoyment. I will continue to keep playing his music. I will play the bands. This is what he would have wanted.... Collapse

I am a lucky man.
First time I saw Jon Hiseman was at a live performance with Barbara Thompson in 1987 in Austria. Being 15 years old at that time I was very lucky being influenced by my older brother, who showed me the other world of music. Remember - the eighties wasn’t really the decade famous of its music quality! So I was like an alien at school listening to artists like Miles Davies, Wheather Report or also John Mayall and Eric Clapton or Pink Floyd.
Suddenly my brother handed over “Colosseum Live”. I couldn’t believe what I headed! A mix of all the music I admired, jazz elements, blues classics and sometimes elements of rock and roll.
Since 1987 Colosseum is at my side.
Unfortunately the band didn’t perform any more that time. Again I was lucky that suddenly I had the chance to see the band live in 2011 and 2014.
I met Jon after the concert in Salzburg and got a signed drumstick for my son who started playing the drums that time.
They disbanded in 2015 and luckily Jon started the JCM project and I got tickets for the concert at 16. May in Salzburg. I had the chance to see them in Vienna or Innsbruck (I was even there at 10. April but didn’t see them looking forward for the 16. May...)
So then the tragedy began and Jon got ill and the concerts had to be cancelled.
But I still think I am a lucky man having seen Jon Hiseman live three times. The music will be permanently there, it is forever.
I am so sad for Jon and his family.
He will be unforgotten... Collapse

I first heard Jon with Colosseum in the sixties - his playing thrilled me and I immediately became a fan for life. It was a great honor for me to meet him at his home in the mid-90s to interview him for Talking Drums magazine (I met Barbara and their daughter as they were just leaving to go shopping so I have no real memory of them unfortunately). Jon was very gracious and generous with his time, walking me through his studio and showing me his collection of snare drums out in the garage. He even helped me with my tape recorder when it started acting up in the middle of the interview - the guy could do everything! A great man with a great talent, a great mind, a great reputation, and a great heart. My life is better for having heard and met him.... Collapse
